Who were the humble and horny who inspired and posed for Gustav Klimt

In the life of the famous Austrian artist there were hundreds of women: the rich wives of the Viennese elite and the poor prostitutes, friends for many years and random. He is credited with up to 40 illegitimate children. Each canvas of the innovator of painting is saturated with thick and powerful eroticism. In all the pictures – only women. He wrote his favorite models many times. However, the only relationship that he carried throughout his life was most likely platonic. He painted this woman only twice, and she truly hated her portraits by the great Klimt.

Gustav Klimt basically did not write self-portraits. He considered his appearance unremarkable and not worthy of his own brush. And indeed, photographs of the beginning of the 20th century convey to us an image of a not very interesting, albeit slightly eccentric man. Despite this, there were legends about his many novels in Vienna. As a true artist, Klimt fell in love with almost every model and knew how to achieve reciprocity. Virtually any of his paintings is a story, if not love, then an undoubted desire.

The early period of the artist’s work is distinguished by the almost photographic accuracy of the figures on the canvases. A gallery of works written in a classical manner made it popular, but over time, it seems, such a painting bored the master.

Over time, it is more and more captures the modern style, and with it the pictures are becoming more frank and outrageous. In 1898, the capital of Austria literally exploded with delight and horror. Under the leadership of Gustav Klimt, the first exhibition of the Vienna Secession was held – an independent association of artists who broke with the traditional style of painting. Klimt himself exhibited “Philosophy” – one of three allegorical paintings ordered to him for the design of the University of Vienna.

Gustav Klimt. Faculty paintings Philosophy, Medicine and Law. Unfortunately, the canvases were destroyed in 1945, and now we can judge them only by black and white photographs.

The response to the picture was a perturbed letter from 87 professors, in which they decried this “pornographic” painting and demanded to take the order from Klimt. However, the artist, who received economic freedom thanks to a series of portraits of wives of wealthy patrons, in the future writes only what he wants. This series of “ceremonial canvases,” although it is notable for its modesty, still carries the stamp of incredible admiration for female beauty.

The ladies in his portraits did not become incredible beauties, the artist never departed from his photographic accuracy, but acquired some elusive scent of the female essence, which made Klimt so popular. No wonder that the queue of customers in his workshop has never dried up. However, the master continues to shock the audience. The next shocking work is the “Naked Truth” – a vulgar and sensual, written clearly not with the noble matron.

The public once again exploded. The artist was offered to judge, expel from the country and castrate. It is known that at his regular exhibition the famous collector, Count Laskoronsky, holding his head, repeated several times “What a horror”. The master himself, in response, wrote a canvas called “My critics.” Part of the body in the foreground does not need comments. Later, the picture gave a more modest name “Golden Fish”.

It is believed that many of his models were prostitutes, so the poses of women in the paintings are so natural-frank. The memoirs of contemporaries about how an eccentric artist in his workshop created a real eastern serale are preserved. The room was free to go, chatted or lay a few naked models, and the master himself in ancient Greek chiton and sandals worked on the canvas. Sometimes he shouted to some model “Freeze!” And quickly made a sketch. Several thousand such sketches have been preserved.

However, the artist, bathing in his irrepressible sexuality, continued to develop. His fans were waiting for the next “golden” period of creativity and the new model, which has become beloved for many years.
